This Portuguese word attracted much attention in the British media in 2007, when Kate and Gerry McCann were named as suspects in the case of the disappearance of their daughter Madeleine.
Madeleine disappeared on 3 May 2007, while on holiday in the Algarve with her parents and her two–year–old twin siblings (a boy and a girl). She was three years old at the time. Ten years later, no one had ever been formally charged with any offence in relation to her disappearance, and no trace of her had ever been found.
